OCON Training Day 2

Today we discussed features of a lesson plan, strategies used in OCON lessons, and lesson feedback. Choose one of the following to respond to.

1. Which strategy are you most excited about using? Why? Which strategies do you have more questions about? What are some strategies you have used effectively in your social studies classroom?

2. What do you think about the Feedback Form? Do you think you will use it? Why or why not? Do you think it will be easy to complete? What suggestions do you have for improving?

  1. I am most excited about using the Act it Out strategy. I think that it will be very fun and engaging for all students. I can see a lot of laughter happening with that activity. I have questions about the I have...Who has... strategy. I have tried that before and somehow the cards were out of whack I'm wondering how you set that up so that the game flows and then ends.

The feedback form seemed simple and straightfoward and easy. Getting the completed forms back to your team is kinda ify. I would use the form. I think that we should keep the forms until the next pull out meeting.

  2. The feedback form is simple BUT I think it will be put in the "pile" of papers that we have to fill out! I want to give feedback but I know I will not give it weekly maybe I would be more likely to do it at the end of the unit. This feedback form is going to really weigh down this great new program!

  3. I like the Feedback Form. I will use it because I believe it will be very helpful for the planning of grades K, 1,2, and 5. The online form will be great and less time consuming compared to a paper that must be completed and mailed.

  4. I like the feedback form. I think it will help enhance the lessons and will provide future teachers with information that will benefit them. My biggest concern is remembering to fill them out. A reminder to fill it out would help.

  5. I believe that the feedback form would be a good tool for us to use as a pilot school. We will be able to convey information back to the writers about how their lessons worked in the classroom. I think that the easiest way for this to be done is weekly so that teams are able to sit down and fill them out together as they discuss their successes of OCON. I think that this is an excellent tool that could provide critical feedback!! I will definitely use it!

  6. 1. I am excited about using "act-it-out." Students will be actively engaged and be able to use thier creativness to role play characters and senerios for the rest of the class. Students will make a connection to it and learn effectively from other students. I am just excited to try new things and spice up social studies.
    2. I like the feedback form. It is a quick and easy way to reflect on the lessons. I will use it because it is a simple way to give feedback. If filled out after each lesson it will be fresh in your mind and you can give effective feedback.

  7. I like the Act it Out strategy. Getting the kids moving and focused on content at the same time is great! I enjoy using music in my classroom. Hope I can find ways to include music with the OCON lessons.

I think it's important to use the feedback form fairly often so I don't forget the pros and cons of the lessons.

  8. No problem doing the feedback form. I've been in your position before, and all feedack is necessary and helpful.

  9. 1. I'm excited about the literature component. I love reading to my students and in the past I have found it difficult to have all the books that are suggested with the Social Studies lessons. It's awesome to have them right at your fingertips.
I have questions about the Frayer Model Graphic Organzier because I haven't used it before. The strategies that I have used in the past are: Exit Slip, Foldable, T-Charts, Webs, Venn Diagrams, Interactive Read Aloud, Reader's Theater, Shared Reading, Teaching Poster, Technology, Text-to-Self Connection, Text-to-World Connection, Think Aloud, and Vocabulary Book Foldable.
    2. I think the Feedback Form is an excellent idea. It seems easy to use and won't take much time to fill out. I will definitely use it since it will be helpful for those teaching this in the future. I do think it would be easier to have the form online so then we could easily submit it.

  10. I am the most excited about using jigsaws. I learned about that strategy in college, but it has been a long time since I've done them. It is cooperative, informative, and gives the students ownership of the information. I would like to know more about the rivet strategy. I already use think pair share for social studies as well as other subjects.

I think the feedback form asks informative questions. I will be more likely to use it if it is posted online. I have so much paperwork, I would be afraid that I would lose it. It does look easy to complete.

  11. I really think that the feedback form can give everyone information about what is/isn't productive about the lesson. If you can put it online so I can just check the boxes, instead of finding the paper and remembering to send it in, I think you would get information from me.

  12. I really like the feedback form. It will be great to be able to report on each lesson's effectiveness.

My issue right now is getting my head around the overall scope and sequence of this initiative. I think it would help, if in the intro., after you establish the reason for this curriculum (Berman and Jerry), you give participants an overview sheet..."Here's what we are going to be looking at..." I feel like I'm coming into this backward, and trying to figure out where I'm going! Thanks

  13. I loved the "Act-It-Out" strategy. In our session yesterday, everyone was engaged in the activity. The actors had to position themselves just like the image and be prepared to answer questions from the audience. The audience seemed focused on what the actors were doing and excited about asking questions. A lot of great questions and discussion can come from an activity like this. I also like how it incorporates kinsethetic learning!

  14. I think the feedback form is crucial. Making it accessible online will increase the likelihood that everyone will respond. Being able to manage paperwork electronically is convenient and will allow us to reflect and respond in the most timely manner.
