We have covered a lot of material in the past four days! Today we spent the morning looking at formative and summative assessment strategies embedded throughout the curriculum and continued our conversation on sensitivity issues.
Please respond to the following:
1. How can the seven strategies of Assessment for Learning enhance student understanding of social studies?
2. Which civic disposition(s) do you think will be useful in addressing sensitivity issues in your classroom?
Also, if you need to revisit the Day 3 comments please do so.
1. Really the possibilities are numerous. The seven strategies are going to allow them to take charge of their own learning and track where they are going in Social Studies. They will learn how to self assess, which is lacking in my classroom.
ReplyDelete2. I think that compassion will be a useful disposition in addressing sensitivity in my classroom.
I believe the 7 strategies of Assessment for Learning puts kids more in charge of their learning and reflecting upon themselves. It will enhance student understanding because it will clear up misconceptions and give a lot of information to the teacher about where the students are.
ReplyDeleteOpen-Mindedness will be useful when addressign sensitivity issues. Students need to realize that everyone is different and be try to understand different issues that different people may have.
1. Kids have ownership of their learning and they are accountable for their answers.
ReplyDelete2. I also thinh that open-mindedness is critical if you want deep conversations and discussions. Students also need an awareness.
1. Just by the act of introduction the 7 will begin to open the minds of our students to the fact that they do have responablities to the comunities even though they are children.
ReplyDelete2. Compassion and open - mindedness will help address sensitivity.
1.Self-assessment and self-reflection should be part of every person's life. These are good practices that can carry over into adulthood.
ReplyDelete2. Open-mindedness. It's more fun!
It a way for students to take control and being responsible of their of their own learning.
ReplyDeleteCritical mindness will help with sensitivity because students will have analyze what is happening and why! I will be hard at first but will hoping get easier.
I think the seven strategies of Assessment for Learning enhance student understanding of social studies because the student takes an active part in learning and growing.
ReplyDeleteThe civic dispositions I think will be useful in addressing sensitivity issues in my classroom are open-mindedness, critical-mindedness,social justice and common good.
I think critical thinking will be the most useful in all areas in creating lifelong learners. Teaching students that assessment is more than a grade will help focus them on looking at investing energy in learning.
ReplyDeleteThe seven strategies will increase students' ownership in their work. It will also increase their understanding of Social Studies by giving them so many opportunities to learn about, reflect on, discuss, and connect with historical as well as real-world issues/events. I am excited that Social Studies is moving away from "textbook teaching" and toward inquiry-based and experiential learning. I like how the strategies emphasize so much self-assessment, self-reflection, and peer interaction.
ReplyDeleteI think that, in one way or another, ALL of the civic dispositions are related to the sensitivity issues that may come up in our classrooms. Commitment to Social Justice and Compassion though strike me as the most connected dispositions, as they both focus on the treatment and care for others.
The civic dispositions that would go with sensitivity are: social justice, open-mindedness,compassion, and compromise.
