Morning Blog Question - OCON Training 7/28/11

Recognizing that some of you are veterans and some of you are new to OCON, reflect on the Civic Dispositions presented this morning.

Which civic disposition do you think was/will be the easiest for your students to understand?

With which one did/will they have more difficulty?

What are some instructional strategies you used/might use to help them grasp this civic disposition?

9 comments:

  1. Compassion

    Critical-Mindedness

Use of literature, modeling, role playing.

  2. As a 2nd grade teacher I think that promotion of the common good would be a disposition that would be the easiest for my students to understand. I believe that open-mindedness may be a little more difficult for them to grasp. I think using more visual aids such as videos may help.

  3. I think compassion will be the easist for my students to understand because we have had CFK in our building for the last 3 years. It seems to correlate well with that particular disposition.

I think that my students will have the most difficulty with open-mindedness. I believe that kids think that everyone should/does think like they do, likes the same things as them, etc. I think it is hard for them to get out of that mind-set.

I will be sharing with them as many different resources as possible. I want them to be exposed to as many different cultures/people as possible and I think the more exposure they have the less they will be scared/closed-minded towards people/cultures.

  4. Compassion is the easiest.
Promotion of the Common Good will be difficult.
Great strategies are literature, open discussions, debate, etc.

  5. Many of the civic dispostions go hand-in-hand with each other. I believe that teaching kids to be compassionate will be easy for kids to learn. Most students want to help someone in need. Open-Mindedness is harder to teach kids because they feel that they are always right and it is hard for them to see it from another perspective. I believe that inquiry and modeling will help students to uncover the past, learn from it and make plans for the future!!!!

  6. This training has been very helpful. I am definitely excited about teaching and learning this curriculum. Im glad I have an opportunity to get away from the traditional "boring" ways of teaching social studies. I think my students will be highly engaged and excited about their learning.

The civic dispositions are great for learning history and character building. I think COMPASSION will be the easiest for students to grasp because they have been learning about this in some form since they have been in school. COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE will probably be the most difficult for them to understand because it requires a different kind of action that extends beyond they immediate circumference. Becoming advocates for social justice is a powerful disposition that will more than likely extend beyond the classroo. I also think it will de difficult for them to understand CRITICAL-MINDEDNESS because students are accustomed to seeing things from their own personal perspective. It is almost like teaching this disposition is going against what their brain natural wants to do and that is see things through their lenses only. This is also a powerful piece in helping them reach decision while considering all points of view.

  7. Compassion and individual responsibility are the two civic dispositions that I think will be the easiest for students to comprehend. I think this s.s. corriculum will engage students and make it relevant.

  8. I think compassion is easy for my students to understand and relate to in my school. They should be able to share examples related to their lives.
The most difficulty is Critical-Mindedness and open-mindedness. Childre are very egoistic at fourth grade age.
Giving students several examples, modeling, and reteaching.

  9. Understanding the civic dispositions appears to be obtainable by the students. The strategies used that seem beneficial are think-pair-share, group work, and visuals along with the read alouds.
